How could it be improved?

  1. Improve the subject line with more inspiring language and by making it timely - for example: 'GIA lab classes and seminars - Book now for Autumn 2008!' If you can't decide on a subject line, come up with a couple of options and monitor their effectiveness by segmenting your database and sending different versions to each segment.
  2. Give the email a clearer structure by creating a hierarchy of information and show the benefits of each course by using a subheading and including a clear call to action after each course eg:

Diamond Grading Lab Classes - 21-25 January Learn how to judge and grade clarity, colour, and cut quality factors. More info | Book now
  3. Create an element of time pressure for readers to book a place. This could consist of early-bird discounts, listing the number of places left (if only a few) or offering free course materials if they 'register today'.
  4. Make the most of the email as a promotional tool for your whole brand and use the look and feel of your website in the template design. Even better, include links to key content areas on the site. The logo should definitely have a link that takes you straight to the homepage.
  5. Use images wisely and make sure they illustrate the main proposition. This will not only help to identify the must-read content, but liven up the design as well.
  6. Avoid dark backgrounds and dark fonts like the plague. Instead opt for dark fonts on a lighter background as they are proven to be the easiest to read. Also, for clarity, make sure the title font is larger than the one you use in the body.
  7. Instead of using a cryptic or clever heading, think about describing the content clearly and leading with the benefit to the reader. Keep headings concise, to the point, but intriguing. For example, replace 'Under the microscope' with 'Book hands-on study time'.
  8. Make the email more scannable and reduce the need to scroll down by keeping your explanatory text clear and succinct. Stick to a short explanation with a link to more information if necessary.
